By Lungile Ntimba
In a remarkable recognition of his lifelong contributions to the field of cybersecurity, Prof. Basie von Solms from the University of Johannesburg has been awarded the prestigious Isaac L. Auerbach Award by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP). This accolade, which has only been bestowed seven times in the federation’s 64-year history, underscores the significant impact von Solms has had on global cybersecurity research over the past five decades.
A Legacy of Excellence in Cybersecurity
Prof. von Solms has been a trailblazer in cybersecurity, dedicating his career to understanding and combating digital threats. His work has been instrumental in shaping the global narrative around information security, particularly as the world grapples with increasingly sophisticated cyber threats. Earlier this year, he was ranked fifth in the world for lifetime contributions to cybersecurity research by ScholarGPS, a testament to his profound influence in a field that has never been more critical.
“Cybersecurity is more critical than ever in today’s world of evolving digital threats. Ongoing research and collaboration are essential to staying ahead of these challenges,” von Solms remarked, highlighting the urgency of continued innovation in the sector.
The Importance of the Isaac L. Auerbach Award
The Isaac L. Auerbach Award is named after the federation’s founding president and an early computing pioneer, Isaac L. Auerbach. It serves to honor individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the field of information processing. Von Solms expressed his gratitude for receiving this award, stating, “This award is the pinnacle of my long-standing relationship with IFIP. I am honoured to have represented South Africa for so many years and to contribute to the advancement of information processing on a global scale.”
His recognition not only celebrates his personal achievements but also shines a light on South Africa’s growing role in the global cybersecurity landscape.
Addressing the Cybersecurity Crisis
The urgency of cybersecurity cannot be overstated. According to security firm Check Point, South African businesses face an alarming average of 1,000 cyberattacks each week. This statistic underscores the critical need for robust cybersecurity measures and research, areas in which von Solms has been a leading figure since the early 1980s. His contributions have not only advanced academic understanding but have also provided practical solutions to combat digital threats.
Mentorship and Leadership
Beyond his research, Prof. von Solms has played a pivotal role in nurturing the next generation of cybersecurity experts. He has mentored over 30 doctoral students and numerous master’s students, many of whom have focused their studies on information and cybersecurity. His commitment to education and mentorship reflects his belief in the importance of fostering new talent in the field.
In addition to his role at the University of Johannesburg, von Solms serves as an Associate Director at the University of Oxford’s Global Cybersecurity Capacity Centre and is a board member of the Centre for Cybersecurity Capacity Centre of Southern Africa. His leadership in these roles further amplifies his influence on a global scale.
Acknowledging Support and Collaboration
In his acceptance of the Isaac L. Auerbach Award, von Solms dedicated the honor to key institutions that have supported him throughout his journey, including the Institute for IT Professionals of South Africa and the University of Johannesburg. “I am incredibly thankful for the time and freedom UJ has granted me to participate in IFIP over the years,” he stated.
He emphasized that the award is not just a recognition of his work but also a testament to the support from his colleagues, students, and the university. “It has been an honour to contribute to the advancement of this field, and I look forward to seeing how the next generation builds on this legacy,” he added.
A Proud Moment for the University of Johannesburg
Prof. Annah Moteetee, Dean of the Faculty of Science at UJ, expressed immense pride in von Solms’ achievements. “We are immensely proud of Prof. Von Solms’ contributions to both UJ and the global community. His work has been nothing short of groundbreaking, and we celebrate him for this extraordinary recognition.”
As the cybersecurity landscape continues to evolve, the contributions of pioneers like Prof. Basie von Solms remain vital. His dedication to research, mentorship, and global collaboration sets a benchmark for future generations in the field. The Isaac L. Auerbach Award is not just a personal accolade; it is a celebration of a legacy that will inspire many to come.
