In 2014, the Indian government launched the "Make in India" initiative, aiming to boost manufacturing and attract foreign investment. At that time, few could have predicted the profound impact technology would have on the country. Fast forward to today, and I find myself mentoring young students from various parts of India, including small towns, who are already well-versed in cutting-edge technologies like blockchain, AI, machine learning, and even quantum computing. This shift underscores a crucial truth: the future of India is digital, and computer science is the key to unlocking that future.
The Growing Demand for Tech Professionals
As industries across the country embrace digital transformation, the demand for skilled computer science professionals is surging. According to the World Economic Forum, an estimated 97 million new AI-related jobs will be created globally by 2025. India, with its robust IT industry, is poised to be a significant player in this global demand. The country’s tech ecosystem is witnessing rapid growth in areas such as AI, machine learning, blockchain, and cybersecurity—pillars of future innovations.
A report by Deloitte India and Nasscom, titled "Advancing India’s AI Skills," emphasizes the urgent need to build a skilled workforce to sustain this momentum. The report highlights a projected spike in demand for AI talent in India, making it imperative for educational institutions and businesses to collaborate in bridging the skills gap.
A Digital-First Future
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects that employment in computer and information technology occupations will grow by 11% between 2019 and 2029, significantly outpacing the average for all occupations. This trend is particularly pronounced in India, where companies are increasingly adopting digital tools and AI to maintain competitiveness. A recent EY survey revealed that 70% of Indian CEOs plan to ramp up investments in AI and emerging technologies in the coming years.
Moreover, India boasts one of the youngest populations globally, with over 62% of its citizens in the working age group (15-59 years) and more than 54% below the age of 25. This demographic advantage means that adaptability to dynamic digital environments and learning agility will become essential prerequisites for the workforce.
With around 1,700 Global Capability Centres (GCCs) in the country, an estimated 2.7 million people are projected to be employed by 2026, particularly benefiting Tier-II cities like Pune, Chennai, and Hyderabad. With over 4,600 engineering colleges offering Bachelor of Technology (BTech) courses, students have ample opportunities to specialize in high-demand areas such as AI, data science, extended reality, and cybersecurity.
