Safaricom Hosts Cybersecurity Summit: A Call to Action for Kenya’s Digital Future

As the digital landscape continues to evolve, so too do the threats that accompany it. In recognition of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Safaricom, Kenya’s leading telecommunications provider, is taking a proactive stance by hosting a two-day Cybersecurity Summit in Nairobi. This significant event, themed “Secure Innovation, Unstoppable Growth for Kenyan Financial Services,” aims to galvanize businesses, government entities, and individuals to invest in robust technologies that protect sensitive data and critical systems from the ever-growing tide of cyber threats.

A Gathering of Experts

The summit is set to attract nearly 500 cybersecurity industry leaders and professionals, creating a platform for dialogue on the latest trends in cybersecurity and the evolving nature of enterprise networks. This gathering underscores the urgency of addressing cybersecurity challenges in Kenya, particularly as the nation becomes increasingly digitized.

Peter Ndegwa, Safaricom’s Chief Executive, emphasized the company’s commitment to providing solutions that not only connect but also protect and transform businesses. “At Safaricom, we continue to provide a variety of solutions that connect, protect, enable, and transform business, ensuring business continuity even in the face of cyberattacks,” he stated. This commitment is crucial as the frequency and sophistication of cyber threats continue to rise.

The Rising Tide of Cyber Threats

Recent statistics paint a concerning picture of Kenya’s cybersecurity landscape. Between April and June 2024, the country recorded over 1.1 billion cyber threats, according to the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA). This alarming surge is attributed to several factors, including the proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, insecure system configurations, outdated software, and the rapid advancement of technologies such as Artificial Intelligence.

Cynthia Kropac, Safaricom’s Chief Enterprise Business Officer, highlighted the vulnerability of Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) in this digital age. “With growing digitalization globally, MSMEs remain vulnerable to cyber-attacks due to a lack of understanding of security risks and limited capital allocation to mitigate such threats,” she explained. This vulnerability is particularly concerning given that MSMEs are critical to Kenya’s economy.

Empowering MSMEs Through Knowledge

The summit aims to address the knowledge gap among MSMEs regarding cybersecurity. Kropac stressed the importance of equipping these businesses with the necessary skills and training to identify and combat cyber threats effectively. “There is a need to equip MSMEs with knowledge and hands-on training on how to identify and combat cyber threats and become more cyber-resilient,” she urged. This proactive approach is essential for fostering a secure digital environment where businesses can thrive without the constant fear of cyberattacks.

The Broader African Context

The challenges faced by Kenya are not unique; they reflect a broader trend across the African continent. An Interpol African Cyberthreat assessment report for 2024 revealed that Africa experienced the highest average weekly cyber-attacks per organization in Q2 2024. This alarming statistic is largely due to inadequate cybersecurity infrastructure, with nearly 90% of African businesses lacking proper cybersecurity protocols. This leaves them vulnerable to attacks, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive cybersecurity strategies across the continent.

A Commitment to Cybersecurity

The Safaricom Cybersecurity Summit is not just an event; it represents a commitment to fostering a culture of cybersecurity awareness and resilience in Kenya. As the second annual summit, it builds on the foundation laid in previous years, aiming to create a collaborative environment where stakeholders can share insights, strategies, and best practices.

In conclusion, as Kenya navigates the complexities of a digital economy, the importance of cybersecurity cannot be overstated. The Safaricom Cybersecurity Summit serves as a vital platform for addressing these challenges head-on, encouraging investment in protective technologies, and fostering a culture of awareness and preparedness. As businesses and individuals come together to tackle these issues, the hope is that Kenya can emerge as a leader in cybersecurity resilience, paving the way for sustainable growth in the financial services sector and beyond.
