National Online Workshop on Mental Health and Cyber Security: A Step Towards Youth Empowerment
On October 10, 2023, the Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSEL) under the Ministry of Education organized a significant national online workshop focused on Mental Health and Cyber Security in observance of World Mental Health Day. This initiative aimed to engage the youth in crucial discussions surrounding their mental well-being and the safe use of the internet, addressing two of the most pressing issues faced by students today.
A Comprehensive Approach to Mental Health
The workshop featured two enlightening sessions led by distinguished experts in their respective fields. Dr. Rajesh Sagar, a Professor in the Psychiatry Department at AIIMS Delhi, conducted a session dedicated to mental health. His presentation provided valuable insights into the prevalence of mental health disorders among youth, emphasizing that nearly 50% of these disorders manifest before the age of 14. Dr. Sagar highlighted common stressors faced by students, including academic pressure, parental conflicts, and bullying. He advocated for early intervention and shared effective coping strategies, such as deep breathing exercises and cognitive restructuring techniques, aimed at fostering a happier and healthier childhood.
Cyber Security: Safeguarding the Digital Space
The second session was led by Dr. Rashmi Sharma Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Police at the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre, Ministry of Home Affairs. Dr. Yadav’s presentation focused on the critical importance of cyber hygiene and security for children. She outlined preventive measures against prevalent issues such as cyberbullying, online grooming, and fraudulent gaming applications. Dr. Yadav encouraged students to be vigilant and report any instances of cyber fraud through the helpline 1930 and the @cyberdost platform. Her emphasis on responsible internet use, parental awareness, and the safeguarding of personal information resonated with the audience, reinforcing the need for a proactive approach to online safety.
Engaging a Nationwide Audience
The workshop was broadcast live on YouTube, reaching an impressive audience of over 20 lakh students and educators across the nation. Engaging students from classes VI to XII from various educational institutions, including Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas, CBSE, and state government schools, the initiative was designed to be inclusive. Notably, the sessions were simultaneously presented in sign language, ensuring accessibility for all participants, which garnered widespread appreciation from attendees.
Commitment to Student Well-Being
Shri Vipin Kumar, Additional Secretary of DoSEL, opened the workshop by underscoring the importance of mental well-being and the safe utilization of the internet among students. He stressed the necessity of early intervention to mitigate the potential adverse effects of mental health challenges in today’s digital age. Smt. Archana Sharma Awasthi, Joint Secretary of DoSEL, reinforced the commitment of the National Education Policy 2020 to prioritize student well-being. She urged everyone to attentively listen to the advice given by the experts, emphasizing the significance of mental health for both students and educators.
