Embracing Diversity in Cybersecurity: A Journey of Resilience and Opportunity
In the ever-evolving landscape of the cybersecurity industry, progress hinges on the strength and diversity of its participants. Despite the persistent gendered stereotypes that have historically plagued the tech sector, there is a growing recognition of the importance of workforce diversification. This shift has created a supportive environment for women, allowing them to not only enter the field but also thrive and make significant contributions.
The Turning Point: A New Path in Cybersecurity
Transitioning into cybersecurity from a vastly different industry can be a daunting endeavor, fraught with unique complexities that demand resilience and passion. For many, including myself, the journey begins with a pivotal moment that reignites a long-held interest in technology. In my case, that moment came in 2011 when I completed a security course that opened my eyes to the vast possibilities within the cybersecurity realm. While embarking on a new career path later in life may seem intimidating, it also highlights the abundant opportunities available for women who have nurtured a passion for technology throughout their lives.
The Importance of Supportive Company Culture
While turning points in one’s career can occur organically, the subsequent environment often determines whether that path is fully pursued. Company culture, policies, and initiatives that create space for women and empower their careers are crucial for sustained growth. Reflecting on my own career journey, joining a company like Orro has been transformative. Orro’s commitment to valuing reskilled workers and championing diversity across gender and beyond has significantly influenced my career trajectory, providing me with the support and resources necessary to flourish.
Balancing Career Growth and Personal Life
Since becoming part of the Orro family, I have been fortunate to continue my studies while working from Townsville, allowing me to remain close to my family—something I once thought impossible. Initially, I believed that a career in cybersecurity would necessitate relocating to a metropolitan area, along with the mental and physical challenges of uprooting my family. However, being the only employee in my area has presented unique challenges, but it has also afforded me the opportunity to engage directly with multiple customers and projects across various touchpoints. This high level of exposure has undeniably accelerated my skill development, deepening my understanding and passion for the work.
Opportunities for Growth and Learning
Every new challenge I’ve faced has opened doors for growth, amplified by the progression structures available at Orro. These structures allow me to expand my knowledge both horizontally across different practices and vertically as I gain experience. This flexibility has enabled me to explore emerging areas such as artificial intelligence and its potential impact on cybersecurity in the future. The ability to adapt and learn continuously is vital in a field that is constantly evolving, and I am grateful for the opportunities that Orro provides.
Giving Back to the Community
Understanding the transformative power of opportunity through my own experiences has fueled my passion for sharing my knowledge of cybersecurity with my family and the wider Townsville community. Growing up as a young Ngiyampaa Wangaaypuwan woman, I had little exposure to this industry; all I knew was that I found technology and its functions utterly fascinating. Now, four years into my cyber career, I find it fulfilling to share these opportunities with other young women in the Townsville Indigenous community.
Through Orro’s partnership with the Stars Foundation, I have the privilege of working with students from Heatly Secondary College. My role involves showing them what a career in cybersecurity can look like and supporting their education to equip them with the tools they need to pursue their desired careers—whatever that may be. For me, working with these young girls is about providing them with opportunities I never had, and I hope programs like this continue to grow, helping us move closer to a truly equal workforce.
Celebrating Women in Cybersecurity
On International Women in Cyber Day, reflecting on my own career and those of my female colleagues fills me with pride. Women in cybersecurity are brave, bold, resilient, and intelligent, driving this sector to its full potential. As I progress in my career, I am excited to see more women entering the doors of Orro, ready to challenge themselves in this dynamic industry.
In conclusion, the cybersecurity field is not just a domain for the tech-savvy; it is a space ripe with opportunities for women from all walks of life. By fostering a culture of inclusivity and support, we can continue to break down barriers and pave the way for future generations of women in cybersecurity. Together, we can build a more diverse and resilient workforce that reflects the world we live in.
