Hello Friends, I am Sudhakar here and today let us take a cursary glance on why organisations and individuals are considering Lampless or Lampfree Projectors instead of opting to go with Lamp based Projectors, which has Mercury in it.

Apart from other advantages, one of the major driving factors is Minamata Convention.

For years together, when someone talks about a Projector, the very first thing which pops up in our mind is the Projector lamp. Projector lamp draws maximum attention because of its LIFE span with around 3000 to 4000 hrs. And as the number of usage hours increase, the brightness and quality of image falls down drastically before reaching its End of life.

One can still remember the embarrassing situation of the concerned officials, when there is an important meeting in the Office and the lamp has reached its half life..
Even though the image Brightness is at a significantly lower side, one has to manage the show as they can neither change the lamp nor the Projector!!

However, in case of Lampless or Lampfree Projectors, there is a consistency in terms of Image brightness because they do not use Mercury based lamps & Instead they use a mix of LED’s and Lasers as Light Sources. Eventhough one has to pay a premium for these technologies, it has its obvious advantages:

1. These Light source will have a life span on 20,000 hrs to 30,000 hours.
You know what it means..
Let me show a simple calculation ..
8 hours per day with the assumption that we use 300 days per year.
20,000/ (8 x 300 ) = 20,000 / 2,400 = 8.33 years ( Just an Approximation )

2. There is a consistency in terms of the image Brightness for most of its life span.

3. Unlike Mercury based lamps, there is literally no startup time to reach the Max brightness.
Here it hardly takes around 6 to 8 secs to reach its full Brightness.

5. In addition to this, as there is not much of heat generated, the Projector can be switched off instantaneously without waiting for the cooling-off time.

6. Apart from this, these Projectors have very low power consumption and the same can be installed in 360 Degrees Orientation.

7. Allows us to install the Projector in any of the Orientation as per the site requriements.

Finally, As far as The “Minamata Convention on Mercury” is concerned, it is a “a global treaty to protect human health and the environment from the adverse effects of mercury.”*

It all started with Minamata Desease a Neurological Syndrome which is caused by mercury poisoning.
And was first detected in Japan during the year 1957 when the Industrial waste was getting dumped in nearby water and the locals around were consuming the fishes from those waters.
This desease is also called the Dancing CAT desease as the nearby cats were the first to get affected.

The below mentioned links in the description will give more details on the desesease..

Eventhough it is not mandatory as of now for projectors to avoid mercury, some of the major projector companies like Casio have compeltely eliminated the use of Mercury Lamps in their projectors.
However, the market leaders like Epson, Optoma, Sony, Barco, etc. have started promoting LED & LASER projectors as well. The link below will give you more details.

I belive, now we should put a thought before going ahead with the conventional Lamp based Projectors.
