India’s Oil Demand Set for Growth Amid Festival Season and Agricultural Activity

New Delhi: As the year draws to a close, India’s oil demand is projected to experience a robust growth of 3.5% to 4% year-over-year in the October-December quarter. This anticipated increase is largely attributed to the festive season and heightened agricultural activities, as reported by S&P Global Commodity Insights. After a period of subdued consumption due to excessive monsoon rains, which significantly impacted fuel usage in key sectors, the outlook for the final quarter of 2024 appears promising.

Impact of Monsoon on Oil Consumption

The monsoon season, which typically runs from June to September, brought with it 8% higher-than-average rainfall this year. This excessive precipitation led to a notable dip in oil consumption in September, particularly affecting sectors like transportation and construction. Diesel demand, a critical fuel for these industries, fell nearly 2% year-over-year as road movement, construction, and mining activities were hampered. Conversely, gasoline demand saw a modest increase of 3% compared to the same period last year, despite a slight decrease from the previous month.

Himi Srivastava, South Asia Oil Analyst at S&P Global Commodity Insights, highlighted that the ongoing northeast monsoon rains could temper demand in certain regions, but the overall forecast remains optimistic. The anticipated annual demand increase of 50,000-55,000 barrels per day (b/d) for both gasoline and diesel in Q4 2024 reflects a rebound from the earlier downturn.

Factors Driving Demand Growth

Looking ahead, several key factors are expected to drive fuel consumption higher in the coming months. The onset of the election season in major states such as Maharashtra and Jharkhand, coupled with the marriage season from November to January, is likely to boost transportation fuel demand significantly. Increased automobile sales and the movement of goods during this festive period will further contribute to heightened fuel consumption.

The festival season in India is traditionally marked by increased travel and transportation needs, as families gather to celebrate and participate in various cultural events. This surge in activity typically leads to a spike in fuel demand, particularly for gasoline and diesel, which are essential for personal and commercial transportation.

Global Context and Crude Oil Futures

In the backdrop of these domestic developments, global oil markets are also experiencing fluctuations. On October 22, crude oil futures moved higher amid rising concerns about potential geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which could impact the global oil supply chain. Such uncertainties often lead to volatility in oil prices, affecting both consumers and businesses reliant on stable fuel costs.

India, which imports approximately 85% of its crude oil, remains sensitive to these global dynamics. The interplay between domestic demand and international supply factors will be crucial in shaping the country’s oil consumption landscape in the coming months.

Conclusion

As India approaches the end of 2024, the forecasted growth in oil demand signals a recovery from the challenges posed by the monsoon season. With the festive season and agricultural activities set to drive consumption, stakeholders in the oil and gas sector are poised for a busy quarter. However, the potential impact of global geopolitical tensions on oil prices remains a critical factor to watch. As the country navigates these complexities, the resilience of its oil demand will be a key indicator of economic vitality in the months ahead.
