Strengthening Cyber Resilience in India: The Call for Modernization Amidst AI Threats

As India continues its rapid digital transformation, the cybersecurity landscape is becoming increasingly complex. With the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), industry leaders are urging the government to modernize existing frameworks and policies to bolster the nation’s cyber resilience. This call to action was prominently voiced during a recent panel discussion organized by Microsoft India, where experts from various sectors convened to address the pressing challenges and opportunities in cybersecurity.

The Need for a Dedicated Cybersecurity Ministry

Akhilesh Tuteja, the global head of cybersecurity at KPMG India, emphasized the necessity of establishing a dedicated ministry for cybersecurity and cyber defense. He argued that as India becomes more digitized, cybersecurity must be prioritized not only for the safety of its citizens but also for the economic stability of the country. “That would be the starting point,” Tuteja stated, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

The panel discussion, moderated by Irina Ghose, managing director of Microsoft India and South Asia, also featured insights from Satvinder Madhok, global head of cybersecurity operations at Wipro, and Bithal Bhardwaj, group CISO of GMR Group. Together, they explored the multifaceted role of AI in enhancing cybersecurity measures.

The Role of AI in Cybersecurity

While the malicious use of generative AI by cybercriminals poses significant threats, tech giants like Microsoft are leveraging AI to enhance security protocols. Irina Ghose shared insights on Microsoft’s innovative approach, particularly the introduction of “Copilot for Security” in 2023. This AI-driven solution enables security professionals to transition from a reactive to a proactive stance, significantly improving their ability to respond to incidents.

According to Ghose, users utilizing Copilot for Security have experienced a 26% faster response time and a 35% increase in accuracy when addressing cybersecurity incidents. This advancement is crucial, especially considering that Microsoft now collects approximately 78 trillion security signals daily, a substantial increase from 8 trillion in 2021. “These signals matter a lot to us because we cannot protect anything unless we can see,” she added, underscoring the importance of data in cybersecurity.

KPMG’s Tuteja further elaborated on AI’s potential to improve the signal-to-noise ratio in cybersecurity. Security teams often face an overwhelming number of alerts, and AI can help filter out irrelevant information, allowing them to focus on the most critical threats. He also highlighted the use of generative AI to simulate phishing attempts, which enhances training for security personnel by emulating real attacker behavior.

Enhancing Cybersecurity Awareness and Training

Wipro’s Madhok stressed the importance of awareness as a foundational element of cyber resilience. He advocated for a government framework that fosters trust in security systems and encourages safe digital practices among citizens. Additionally, he pointed out the pressing need to address the shortage of cybersecurity professionals in India. Madhok proposed that training programs should be implemented at the university level to cultivate a skilled workforce capable of tackling cybersecurity challenges.

With over 525,000 villages in India, reaching the last person standing in terms of cybersecurity awareness and training is a monumental task that requires substantial government intervention and resources. The panelists also discussed the growing collaboration among defenders, noting that while hackers often share information for notoriety, defenders are more hesitant due to concerns about reputational damage.

Microsoft’s Renewed Focus on Cybersecurity

In light of recent criticisms regarding its security culture, Microsoft has initiated the Secure Future Initiative (SFI), which involves over 34,000 engineers dedicated to enhancing the company’s cybersecurity strategy. Ghose emphasized that SFI represents the largest engineering cybersecurity effort in Microsoft’s history. The initiative is driven by three core principles: secure by design, secure by default, and secure in operations.

Highlighting the urgency of the situation, Ghose shared alarming statistics from Microsoft’s latest Digital Defense Report, revealing that password attacks have surged to 7,000 per day in 2023, compared to just 579 in 2021. Additionally, six million identity attacks occur daily, underscoring the critical need for robust cybersecurity measures.
