GMA Network and BPI Join Forces to Promote Cybersecurity Awareness

In an era where digital threats loom large, the importance of cybersecurity cannot be overstated. Recognizing this pressing need, GMA Network and the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) have once again collaborated to raise awareness about cybersecurity through an engaging workshop themed “Maging Listo, Huwag Magpaloko.” This event took place on October 18 in Makati City, bringing together industry leaders, artists, and influencers to discuss the critical issue of online safety.

A Gathering of Influencers and Experts

The workshop was graced by notable figures from both GMA and BPI. Angela Javier-Cruz, GMA’s Vice President for Corporate Affairs and Communications, led the charge alongside BPI executives, including Chief Customer and Marketing Officer Cathy Santamaria, Enterprise Information Security Officer Jonathan John Paz, Fraud Risk Operations Division Head Luigi Manianglung, and Public Affairs and Communications Head Maria Elena Torrijos. Their collective expertise underscored the event’s significance in combating the rising tide of cybercrime.

In her opening remarks, Ms. Javier-Cruz emphasized GMA’s commitment to using its platforms for meaningful advocacy. “Throughout our history in GMA, we have used our platforms and reach for significant advocacies like this one. GMA battles fake news, while BPI fights scams and fraud. Together, we aim for what is true. Sabi nga nating mga Kapuso, ‘Dapat Totoo!’” Her words resonated with the audience, highlighting the shared responsibility of everyone present to inform and educate others about cybersecurity.

Empowering Artists and Influencers

The workshop was not just a gathering of corporate leaders; it also featured a host of stars from Sparkle GMA Artist Center. Hosted by Rain Matienzo, the event aimed to equip artists and influencers with essential knowledge to protect their personal information and educate their followers about cybersecurity. Among the talented attendees were Elijah Alejo, Dave Bornea, Angel Leighton, and many others, including powerhouse singers like Liana Castillo and Meghan Dionisio.

The presence of these young stars underscored the importance of engaging the next generation in the fight against cyber threats. By leveraging their influence, these artists can help spread awareness about the dangers of online scams and the importance of vigilance in the digital landscape.

Learning from the Experts

The workshop featured informative discussions led by BPI’s cybersecurity experts, Mr. Paz and Mr. Manianglung. They provided valuable insights into various cyber threats, including phishing, smishing, vishing, and spoofing. Their clear explanations helped demystify these terms for the attendees, emphasizing the need for vigilance to protect oneself from losing hard-earned money to cybercriminals.

The interactive nature of the workshop allowed participants to engage with the material actively. To reinforce their learning, a fun game was organized where Sparkle stars showcased their creativity by performing 60-second skits that promoted cybersecurity awareness. This engaging approach not only made the learning process enjoyable but also ensured that the key messages resonated with the audience.

A Call to Action

As the event drew to a close, Ms. Santamaria delivered a powerful message about the importance of collaboration in the fight against cybercrime. “This would not have been possible without the unwavering support of GMA. Let’s work together to raise awareness and protect our fellow Filipinos from the ever-present threats of cybercrime. Always remember that cybersecurity is a shared responsibility,” she stated, reinforcing the idea that everyone has a role to play in safeguarding their digital lives.

Continuing the Advocacy

This workshop is part of a broader initiative between GMA and BPI to promote cybersecurity awareness. Earlier in May 2023, the two organizations launched a series of cybersecurity videos through GMA NMI, depicting real-life instances of social engineering and scamming attacks. This anti-scam advocacy series was recognized as the sole Philippine finalist in the 2023 Cannes Corporate Media & TV Awards, showcasing the effectiveness of their collaborative efforts.

As digital threats continue to evolve, the partnership between GMA Network and BPI serves as a beacon of hope in the fight against cybercrime. By empowering individuals with knowledge and resources, they are taking significant steps toward creating a safer online environment for all Filipinos.
