Oman Takes Bold Steps to Enhance Cybersecurity at Regional Cybersecurity Week

Muscat, Oman – In a significant move to bolster its cybersecurity landscape, the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) announced a series of innovative initiatives on Monday. These measures were unveiled during the 12th edition of the Regional Cybersecurity Week, a four-day conference that has attracted over 600 decision-makers, experts, and specialists from 60 countries. The event serves as a platform to discuss critical developments in cybersecurity and the myriad threats facing governments, essential national institutions, and vital industries.

Commitment to International Cooperation

In his opening speech, H E Eng Said bin Hamoud bin Said al Ma’awali, the Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, emphasized Oman’s unwavering commitment to enhancing international cooperation in the field of cybersecurity. He highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing the ever-evolving cyber threats that challenge nations worldwide.

The minister also acknowledged the pivotal role of the Regional Cybersecurity Centre in Muscat, which is affiliated with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Since its inception in 2013, the centre has supported over 190 projects across more than 50 countries, benefiting over 10,000 cybersecurity professionals globally. This initiative underscores Oman’s dedication to not only improving its own cybersecurity posture but also contributing to global efforts in this critical area.

Innovative Initiatives Unveiled

The week-long conference showcased a variety of innovative initiatives aimed at fostering creativity and excellence within the cybersecurity sector. Among the highlights was the first Gulf Cybersecurity Industry Hackathon, designed to encourage innovative solutions to pressing cybersecurity challenges. Additionally, the Hadatha Award for the Cybersecurity Industry was introduced to recognize outstanding contributions from institutions and individuals within the cybersecurity landscape.

One of the key initiatives announced by H E Ma’awali is the CREST CAMP programme, which aims to accelerate the maturity of companies providing cybersecurity services. This initiative will be implemented in collaboration with the British CREST organization, ensuring that Omani companies meet international standards and best practices in cybersecurity.

Establishing a Modern Cybersecurity Framework

In a bid to further strengthen the cybersecurity framework in Oman, the government plans to establish the Hadatha or ‘Modernity Center’ for the Cybersecurity Industry. This center will be developed in partnership with Sultan Qaboos University and the University of Technology and Applied Sciences, focusing on nurturing national industries in cybersecurity. By fostering local talent and innovation, Oman aims to create a robust cybersecurity ecosystem that can respond effectively to emerging threats.

Another groundbreaking initiative is the Cybersecurity Industry Monitoring Centre, touted as the first of its kind in the world. This center will be responsible for measuring and monitoring the growth of the cybersecurity industry sector, providing valuable insights that can guide future investments and policy decisions.

Achievements and Future Aspirations

Minister Ma’awali reaffirmed Oman’s commitment to adhering to the highest standards of cybersecurity. He noted that the successful implementation of various initiatives at national, regional, and global levels has positioned Oman among the most prepared countries in cybersecurity, according to the 2024 Global Cybersecurity Index published by the ITU. This achievement is a testament to the collaborative efforts between MTCIT and other government and private institutions, particularly the Cyber Defence Centre.

In his address, the minister reiterated the government’s focus on diversifying income sources through technology, knowledge, and innovation. The digital economy is positioned as a priority for national growth, with plans to develop advanced infrastructure capable of addressing the evolving challenges of cybersecurity. This strategic approach aims to create opportunities and enhance Oman’s digital economy on a global scale.
