Stay Safe Online: Insights from the “Click Smart, Stay Sharp” Event in Drogheda

In an age where cybercrime is on the rise, the importance of online safety cannot be overstated. Recently, Network Ireland Louth, in partnership with AIB, hosted an enlightening event titled “Click Smart, Stay Sharp!” at AIB’s Drogheda branch on Dyer Street. This event brought together a diverse audience eager to learn about the growing threats of cybercrime and how to protect themselves, particularly as the busy shopping season approaches.

A Gathering of Experts

The event was expertly moderated by Audrey O’Doherty, Branch Manager of AIB Drogheda. She set the stage for a panel discussion featuring esteemed cybersecurity experts: Fran Hoban from the Garda Cybercrime Bureau, Simon Toland, Head of Governance for Technology and Data at AIB, and Johnny Miliken, Senior Cyber Security Manager at EKCO. Each speaker brought a wealth of knowledge and practical advice to the table, making the session both informative and engaging.

The Urgency of Vigilance

Simon Toland opened the discussion by emphasizing the critical need for vigilance in today’s digital landscape. He warned attendees against complacency, stating, “It’s important not to be complacent.” Toland highlighted common tactics employed by cybercriminals, such as time-limited offers and low-stock warnings, which are designed to pressure consumers into clicking on malicious links in ads or emails. His insights served as a wake-up call for many, reminding them that cybercriminals are constantly evolving their strategies.

Essential Tips for Online Safety

Fran Hoban, representing the Garda Cybercrime Bureau, shared a series of essential tips for staying safe while shopping online. His advice included:

  • Check for “https” in website URLs: This indicates a secure connection.
  • Look for the lock symbol next to the URL: This further confirms the site’s security.
  • Verify the company’s registration: Ensure that the business is legitimate and check how recent the registration is.
  • Keep antivirus software and system updates current: This helps protect against vulnerabilities.
  • Trust your instincts: Remember, “If an offer looks too good to be true, it probably is!”

These practical tips provided attendees with actionable steps they could take to safeguard their online shopping experiences.

Preparing for the Worst

Johnny Miliken emphasized the importance of being prepared for the worst-case scenario. In the unfortunate event of falling victim to fraud, he urged attendees to take immediate action by contacting their bank, notifying the Gardai, and reaching out to social media platforms. He also highlighted the importance of sharing experiences with friends and family to help prevent others from being scammed. “It’s crucial not to be embarrassed if you’re scammed,” Johnny stated. “Sharing information helps reduce the effectiveness of these scams for criminals.” His words resonated with many, reinforcing the idea that awareness and communication are key in combating cybercrime.

A Growing Concern

As the event concluded, attendees left with a heightened awareness of the risks posed by cybercrime, which has now become the third-largest global economy, following the US and China. The insights shared during the panel discussion equipped participants with the knowledge they need to navigate the online world more safely, especially during the high-stakes shopping periods of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
