The American University in Cairo Enhances Academic Offerings with New Cybersecurity Major and International Collaboration

The American University in Cairo (AUC) is taking significant strides to bolster its academic reputation and meet the evolving demands of the job market. Recently, the university announced the launch of a new major in cybersecurity, a move designed to equip students with the skills necessary to protect digital infrastructure and combat the rising threat of cyberattacks. This initiative is part of AUC’s broader strategy to enhance its academic offerings and ensure that graduates are well-prepared for high-quality, in-demand careers.

Addressing the Cybersecurity Skills Gap

The introduction of the cybersecurity major falls under the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, which has also seen the addition of programs in embedded systems and artificial intelligence over the past two years. This latest major is a direct response to the increasing need for qualified professionals in the field of cybersecurity. As digital threats become more sophisticated, industries across the board—from healthcare to telecommunications—are in urgent need of experts who can safeguard their systems.

Sherif Aly, a professor and chair of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, emphasized the alignment of these specializations with both local and international job markets. "These specializations are very well aligned with the local and international job needs,” he stated. “They position our graduates to land high-quality, higher-paying jobs in the marketplace." Aly further highlighted the critical shortage of professionals capable of protecting digital infrastructure, underscoring the importance of this new major in addressing that gap.

Strengthening International Academic Cooperation

In addition to the launch of the cybersecurity major, AUC is also enhancing its international academic collaboration by welcoming the first cohort of students enrolled in a joint master’s program with Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen, Germany. This innovative program allows students to earn a dual master’s degree in political science from both institutions, marking a significant milestone in the academic partnership between Egypt and Germany.

The joint program is unique in that it offers a political science degree accredited in both Germany and the United States. Students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in diverse academic environments, completing their studies across both universities. The program includes an internship component, a semester abroad at the partner institution, and language studies in Arabic and German, providing a well-rounded educational experience.

Angelos Chatzigiannis, a student in the joint program, expressed his enthusiasm for the curriculum, stating, "Choosing this program was an excellent decision. Coming from Tübingen, Germany, I have been impressed by the rigorous curriculum, which blends theory and practice. The small cohort size also allows for close and meaningful interaction with professors who are eager to provide valuable academic insights."

AUC’s Commitment to Excellence

The launch of the cybersecurity major and the joint master’s program with Eberhard Karls University reflect AUC’s commitment to providing high-quality education that meets the needs of a rapidly changing global landscape. By focusing on emerging fields such as cybersecurity and fostering international collaborations, AUC is positioning itself as a leader in higher education in the region.

As the university continues to innovate and expand its academic offerings, it remains dedicated to preparing its students for successful careers in a variety of fields. The integration of practical skills and international perspectives into its programs ensures that AUC graduates are not only knowledgeable but also adaptable to the challenges of the modern workforce.
