Celebrating Academic Excellence: Graduation Day at Sri Krishna College of Engineering and Technology

On a momentous day in Coimbatore, the 22nd graduation ceremony at Sri Krishna College of Engineering and Technology (SKCET) celebrated the achievements of 1,235 graduates. This event not only marked a significant milestone for the students but also highlighted the ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of engineering education in India.

A Record Number of Graduates

The graduation ceremony saw a diverse group of students receiving their degrees, with 1,099 undergraduates and 126 postgraduate students among the honorees. The event was graced by the presence of dignitaries, including TG Sitharam, the chairman of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), who served as the chief guest. In his address, Sitharam distributed degree certificates, acknowledging the hard work and dedication of the graduates. Additionally, the ceremony recognized 34 rank holders, celebrating their exceptional academic performance.

Addressing Faculty Shortages in Emerging Technologies

In a bid to tackle the pressing issue of faculty shortages in emerging technology areas, AICTE has introduced the AICTE-QIP-PG certificate programme. This initiative has garnered significant interest, with 1,200 faculty members from core engineering disciplines enrolling in the six-month course. The programme aims to equip educators in fields such as mechanical, civil, electrical, and chemical engineering with the knowledge and skills necessary to teach subjects related to emerging technologies like data science and cybersecurity.

Sitharam emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating that upon completion, faculty members would receive a PG certificate from the respective Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in collaboration with AICTE. This move is expected to enhance the quality of education in engineering colleges and better prepare students for the demands of the modern job market.

Enhancing Employability Through New Initiatives

Sitharam also took the opportunity to discuss AICTE’s recent initiatives aimed at improving student employability. The AICTE placement portal and the AICTE career portal have been launched to facilitate connections between students and industry professionals, providing them with access to new digital skills and job opportunities. These platforms are designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry requirements, ensuring that graduates are well-equipped to enter the workforce.

The Landscape of Engineering Education in India

During the ceremony, Sitharam addressed the ongoing trend of computer science courses overshadowing traditional core engineering disciplines. He provided insights into the current enrollment statistics, revealing that approximately 75,000 students are pursuing civil engineering, 65,000 in electrical engineering, 135,000 in electronics and computer engineering, and 95,000 in mechanical engineering. While these numbers indicate a healthy interest in core engineering fields, he acknowledged that the surge in computer science enrollments—currently at six lakh students—reflects market demands.

However, Sitharam expressed optimism about the future of core engineering disciplines. He predicted that in the next two to three years, these fields, especially when integrated with emerging technologies, would regain popularity among students. He stressed the importance of all students, regardless of their major, gaining knowledge in areas such as artificial intelligence and data science, as these skills are becoming increasingly essential across various industries.

A Bright Future for Engineering Students

Sitharam concluded his remarks by highlighting a positive trend: the number of students enrolling in engineering courses has been increasing by 10% annually over the past three years, including in core disciplines like civil engineering. This growth is a promising sign for the future of engineering education in India, as it indicates a renewed interest in these vital fields.

As the graduates of SKCET embark on their professional journeys, they carry with them not only their degrees but also the hope and potential for a brighter future in engineering.
