Strengthening Cybersecurity: IIT Kanpur Launches Cyber Commando Training Program
In an era where digital threats are becoming increasingly sophisticated, the need for a robust cybersecurity framework has never been more critical. Recognizing this urgent requirement, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has taken a significant step forward by launching a specialized six-month residential course known as the ‘Cyber Commando Training Program.’ This initiative aims to enhance India’s cybersecurity readiness and equip participants with cutting-edge skills to combat cyber threats effectively.
A Collaborative Effort
The Cyber Commando Training Program is a collaborative initiative involving the Union Home Ministry and the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C), which operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). This partnership underscores a shared commitment to developing a highly skilled workforce capable of addressing the growing challenges in the cybersecurity landscape. The launch ceremony was graced by several distinguished guests, including Mr. Rajesh Kumar, CEO of I4C, MHA; Mr. Mayank Ghildiyal, Deputy Director of I4C, MHA; Dr. Tanima Hajra, Interim CEO and COO; Mr. A.K. Mishra, CFO; and Mr. Rohit Negi, CSO of C3iHub.
Training the Next Generation of Cyber Commandos
The program is designed to establish a specialized unit of trained cyber commandos within the States/Union Territories (UTs) and Central Police Organisations (CPOs). These cyber commandos will play a crucial role in addressing the increasing threats to the nation’s cybersecurity. Their responsibilities will include assisting States/UTs and central agencies in safeguarding the digital space, conducting security assessments, and responding to cyber incidents.
Prof. Amalendu Chandra, acting director of IIT Kanpur, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, “The collaboration between C3iHub, I4C, and the Union Home Ministry reflects our shared commitment to developing a highly skilled workforce capable of responding to the growing sophistication of cyber threats facing the country.” This sentiment highlights the urgency and significance of the program in today’s digital age.
The Role of C3iHub
The Cyber Commando Training Program is spearheaded by the C3iHub (Cyber-Physical Systems Security Innovation Hub) at IIT Kanpur. C3iHub is a Technology Innovation Hub (TIH) established with funding from the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems. Its primary mission is to detect security vulnerabilities in critical cyber-physical systems, develop security tools to address these vulnerabilities, and foster partnerships with industries to commercialize these tools.
Prof. Sandeep K Shukla, Program Director of C3iHub, elaborated on the critical roles these professionals will undertake. “These professionals will serve in critical roles, from conducting security assessments to responding to cyber incidents, ensuring that our institutions are well-protected,” he stated. This comprehensive approach aims to create a resilient cybersecurity framework that can adapt to the evolving threat landscape.
Addressing Cybercrime in India
The Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) plays a pivotal role in this initiative. Established by the Ministry of Home Affairs, I4C aims to tackle cybercrime in India in a coordinated and comprehensive manner. By integrating the efforts of various stakeholders, I4C seeks to enhance the nation’s ability to respond to cyber threats effectively.
Conclusion
The launch of the Cyber Commando Training Program by IIT Kanpur marks a significant milestone in India’s journey toward strengthening its cybersecurity capabilities. By equipping a new generation of cyber commandos with the necessary skills and knowledge, this initiative aims to create a safer digital environment for all citizens. As cyber threats continue to evolve, the proactive measures taken by institutions like IIT Kanpur and I4C will be crucial in safeguarding the nation’s digital infrastructure and ensuring a secure future in the cyber realm.
