Celebrating Progress: The NETMOD Project at Baumholder
On October 17, 2023, the 102d Strategic Signal Battalion (102d SSB) and the Network Enterprise Center (NEC) at Baumholder, Germany, celebrated a significant milestone with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Smith Barracks. This event marked the successful completion of the Network Modernization (NETMOD) – Baumholder project, a vital component of the ongoing IT modernization efforts that have been in collaboration since 2018 with the Global Enterprise Network Modernization – OCONUS (GENM-O).
The Vision Behind NETMOD
The NETMOD initiative is a Department of Defense (DoD) program designed to enhance network security and performance across military installations. By integrating various technologies into a unified system, the project aims to upgrade internet connections and bolster overall network efficiency. In an era where cyber threats are increasingly sophisticated, the NETMOD initiative is crucial for safeguarding sensitive information and ensuring that DoD operations can proceed without interruption.
Andrea Zalasky, a project management specialist for the Program Executive Office Command, Control, Communications and Network (PEO C3N), highlighted the recent achievements of the team, stating, “Most recently, the team completed migrations, effectively standing up the network.” This accomplishment is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the personnel involved in the project.
Infrastructure Overhaul
The NETMOD project involved a comprehensive telecommunications and infrastructure overhaul. This included significant upgrades to power systems, grounding, and both inside and outside plant facilities. One of the most notable aspects of the upgrade is the design and implementation of a new Application Delivery Network (ADN) on Smith Barracks. This advanced network architecture is designed to provide built-in redundancy and resiliency, ensuring that garrison units can maintain operational continuity even in the face of potential failures or disruptions.
Zalasky emphasized the importance of this upgrade: “The new network upgrade provides built-in redundancy and resiliency, which will benefit garrison units by ensuring that the network remains operational even in the event of a failure or disruption.” While the implementation of these upgrades may lead to temporary network outages, the GENM-O team is committed to communicating any disruptions to units in advance, ensuring minimal impact on operations.
A Broader Initiative
The NETMOD initiative is not limited to Baumholder; it is being rolled out across the Army, with the goal of simplifying network management and enhancing performance and security on an installation-by-installation basis. This comprehensive approach ensures that all military installations can benefit from the latest technological advancements, ultimately leading to a more secure and efficient network for all DoD operations.
Acknowledging Team Efforts
During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the command team of the 102d SSB took the opportunity to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the employees involved in the NETMOD project. Lt. Col. Matthew Britnell, the 102d SSB commander, expressed his gratitude, stating, “Thank you for having us here today to celebrate this important occasion. Every component of our organization possesses its own distinct culture, and when I think of Baumholder, I’m reminded of a small yet highly effective team.”
Britnell praised the team for their success in establishing strong relationships within the community, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in achieving their goals. “Your ability to build strong relationships within this relatively small but expanding community is truly commendable,” he noted.
Command Sgt. Maj. Stormy Graham echoed these sentiments, expressing admiration for the team’s efforts. “The support you all provide to the organization and the Area of Responsibility (AoR) is truly impressive,” he said. “It’s through our shared fellowship, camaraderie, and collective work that we are able to successfully accomplish our mission.”
Conclusion
The ribbon-cutting ceremony at Baumholder not only celebrated the completion of the NETMOD project but also highlighted the dedication and teamwork of the personnel involved. As the Army continues to modernize its network infrastructure, initiatives like NETMOD will play a crucial role in ensuring that military operations remain secure, efficient, and resilient in the face of evolving challenges. The success of this project serves as a reminder of the importance of collaboration and innovation in achieving the Army’s mission, paving the way for a more connected and secure future.
